Tepelena is situated on a rocky mountain, where the valley of the river Drino joins that of the Vjosa. Here are the remains of a bridge, which dates from the second century. Above the bridge a fortress was erected here in the 4-th and 5-th centuries and restored in the 10-th and 11-th Centuries. In 1789, Tepelena was captured by Ali Pasha Tepelena (1740-1822), a powerful Albanian lord, who had set up an autonomous Pashalik at Janina (now in Greece).
